Live Photo Frame Extractor: save any moment as an image

A Live Photo holds about three seconds of video, which means every moment in it can become a picture. Here is how to scrub through the clip and save exactly the frame you want as an image.

What you can pull a frame from

The frame extractor works with any video the browser can decode: a Live Photo motion clip, a video you saved from Photos with Save as Video, or ordinary MOV and MP4 files. If the file plays in your browser, its frames can be captured.

That covers most stills-with-motion situations, because an iPhone Live Photo is a still image paired with a short MOV clip. The clip is where all the extra moments live.

Using the frame extractor on a Live Photo clip

Because you can step one frame at a time, you can land precisely on the smile, the splash, or the stride you were trying to catch when you took the Live Photo.

  • Open the frame extractor and choose your file: the MOV clip from a Live Photo, or any MOV or MP4 video.
  • Move the timeline scrubber to the rough moment you want.
  • Fine-tune the position with the step buttons: jump 0.1 seconds back or forward, or step a single frame at a time, which is one thirtieth of a second.
  • Pick an output format, then press download to save the current frame as an image.

Choosing between JPG, PNG, and WebP

The extractor offers three output formats. JPG is the everyday choice for photos: small files that upload easily. PNG saves the frame without recompression losses, which is useful when you plan to crop or edit the picture further. WebP is a modern middle ground with good compression.

If you are unsure, start with JPG. Switch to PNG when a destination asks for a lossless image or when you notice compression artifacts around fine details.

Let the tool find the sharpest frame

Scanning a clip manually for the crispest moment is tedious, so the extractor can do it for you. The Jump to Sharpest Frame button samples the video, scores frames for focus and detail, and jumps the timeline to the sharpest one it found.

This is handy for handheld clips, where the best-looking frame is rarely the first one. You can still step frame by frame from there if you want a moment next to it.

Why the still frame is not always the picture you want

Every Live Photo also has a built-in key photo: the still image it shows when you press and hold nothing. That key photo is one chosen moment, not necessarily the best frame of the motion, and it cannot be recovered from a still image alone.

What the sharpness scoring is actually doing

The sharpest-frame search is not guesswork. The extractor samples frames across the clip, measures how much detail and focus each one carries, and ranks them by that score before jumping to the winner.

Handheld Live Photos blur easily in the split second around the shutter, so the frame you would have guessed first is often not the sharpest. A quick automated scan catches the one that is, and you can still step one frame either side of it.

Only have the .livp package?

The frame extractor reads video files, so a .livp package needs its clip unpacked first. The main converter does that automatically when you convert the package to MP4, and the resulting video is exactly what the extractor wants.

Convert the .livp to MP4, then load that MP4 here and pick your frame. The still image inside the package is a separate file; if you want it as a JPG, the HEIC converter handles that part.

Saving the key photo without the clip

If all you need is the built-in still image of a Live Photo, you do not need the video at all. The still is a HEIC or JPEG on its own, and the HEIC converter saves it as a JPG or PNG directly.

What that still cannot give you is a different moment. Every frame other than the key photo exists only in the paired motion clip, which is why the two extraction routes exist side by side.

A note on quality

A saved frame is the decoded video image at its native resolution, so it cannot be sharper than the video itself. A clip recorded at 1080p yields a 1080p frame, however good the extraction tools are.

The upside is honesty: what you download is exactly what the video contains at that instant, with no upscaling or recompression beyond the image format you chose.

Frames from Android Motion Photos

An Android Motion Photo hides its video inside the photo file itself. The frame extractor reads video files, so first extract the embedded motion video with the main converter, then load that MP4 here and pick your frame.

Finding one frame in a longer video

The same controls work for full-length videos, not just three-second clips. Use the scrubber to reach the rough area, then switch to the 0.1-second and single-frame steps when you are close.

Frame-stepping is also the reliable way to catch action between two moments, such as a card leaving a hand or a ball crossing the plate. Scrub past the action, step backwards frame by frame, and the exact instant is usually a few presses away.
