How to convert HEIC to PNG in your browser
Most iPhone photos arrive as HEIC, but some destinations want a PNG instead. Here is when PNG is worth choosing and how to convert a HEIC photo to PNG without uploading it.

When PNG is the right choice
PNG is a lossless image format: saving a picture as PNG does not discard image data the way JPG compression does. It also supports transparency, and it is accepted by essentially every website, editor, and operating system.
Choose PNG when you plan to keep editing a copy, when a form or design tool explicitly asks for it, or when you want to avoid adding compression artifacts to a photo you will process further. For everyday sharing, JPG usually produces much smaller files with no visible difference, which is why it remains the default for photos.
Both routes start from the same place: an iPhone photo in HEIC form that a particular destination cannot or should not receive.
How to convert HEIC to PNG

PNG or JPG for an iPhone photo?
For a photo destined for a form, an email, or a social network, JPG is normally the better pick: broadly supported and far smaller. A PNG of the same photo can be several times larger because it refuses to throw detail away.
PNG earns its keep in three situations. First, when a pixel-perfect copy matters more than file size, such as images you will annotate or re-compress later. Second, when the destination specifically requires PNG. Third, when the image contains hard edges and flat color, like screenshots, where JPG compression tends to look worse than on natural photos.

What the PNG contains
The converted PNG holds the visible photo at its original pixel dimensions. Color and detail come through the decode of the HEIC container, and the file is a flat, standard image that any device can open.

As with any format change, some auxiliary metadata may not carry over, so keep the original HEIC as your master and treat the PNG as a delivery copy.
Why not just rename the file?
Changing the extension from .heic to .png only changes the label on the outside; the bytes inside remain HEIC data. Some apps will still refuse it, and the ones that open it are reading the format, not the name.
Real conversion decodes the image and writes it back in the new format, which is what makes the result open anywhere. It takes a moment longer than a rename and produces a file that is genuinely a PNG.
One image at a time
The converter processes one HEIC or HEIF image per run, which keeps the flow simple and predictable: choose a file, see the preview, download the result. For a handful of photos, repeating that loop is usually faster than configuring a batch tool.
The PNG option is lossless by nature, so no quality setting applies to it; the quality control on the page affects JPG output. Your original HEIC stays in place either way, ready for the next conversion.
Troubleshooting HEIC to PNG conversion
- Make sure the selected file is the original photo, not a partial download or a renamed file from another format.
- If the photo previews rotated, check the orientation in your photo library and convert again; orientation is normally handled during decode, but edited sources can misbehave.
- Very large photos take a little longer to decode on older devices; give it a moment before retrying.
- Ordinary JPG, PNG, and WebP images are also accepted and load directly without transcoding, which is handy for format checks.
